The English your licence depends on.

WingWords is a phone app for pilots and air traffic controllers preparing for the ICAO language test. Short lessons, real photographs, and the words you need when a flight stops going to plan.

  • 4 questions a lesson
  • Works with no signal
  • No adverts, nothing sold
How it works

A route, one stop at a time.

The course is a path of short lessons. You always know where you are and what comes next.

  1. 1

    Short lessons

4 questions at a time, from different exam formats. Short enough for a break between flights.

  2. 2

    What you miss comes back

A question you get wrong returns in a later lesson, until you know it.

  3. 3

    Review stops

After every 5 lessons, a stop that only revises what you have already met.

  4. 4

    An exam for each section

One question from every format, and 3 lives. Pass it and the next section opens.

Practice

The exam's formats, one at a time.

Each one trains a different part of the ICAO test.

Name the part

A real photograph with one part marked. Choose the right word for it.

Compare two photos

Two pictures of a similar situation. Say what is the same and what is different.

Describe a picture

Talk or write about a real aviation photograph, in your own words.

Answer questions

Questions like the interview in the exam: your flying, your work, your training.

Tell the story

A short picture story. Say what happens, in order.

Listen to the radio In progress

Calls between pilots and controllers, in many accents. Being prepared now.

All six exercises, in detail

Questions

Who it is for, and what it is not.

What the ICAO English test asks for

Who is WingWords for?

Pilots and air traffic controllers working towards ICAO Level 4 or above, and anyone who uses aviation English at work and wants to keep it in practice.

Does it replace a course or the test?

No. The test is taken with an approved examiner. WingWords is daily practice in the formats the test uses, so you arrive used to them.

Do I need an internet connection?

Not for the lessons. They, the photographs and your progress are on your phone, so you can practise anywhere.

Which phones does it run on?

Android first. An iPhone version is planned.

What does it cost?

It is not in the stores yet, and testers use the early versions free. If you would like to be one of them, write to us.

What happens to what I write?

It stays on your phone, unless you choose to have an answer marked - then that answer is sent to our server to be marked. It is never sold and never part of usage statistics.
